Waiting for your name to be called by an employer before an interview can be very stressful and nerve-wracking. Here are some tips on preparing for an interview beforehand to
relieve some stress you may feel on the “big day.”
Analyze the position you’re applying to: Look over the job description, qualifications, and skills that the employer is looking for in a prospective candidate. Use this information to jot down some questions you may be asked during your interview. It's also an excellent idea to download the free Vault Employer and Industry Guides on Callisto to learn more about the primary responsibilities of specific positions.
Research the Employer: It's crucial to show the employer that you've done your homework! Research and examine the employer’s website. Let them know how interested you are by being well-informed about the company’s services and mission statement. Although it sounds intimidating, you should introduce yourself to employers at career fairs and ask them about their company and the job opportunities. There is an opportunity to do this next week, February 20-21, at the Internship and Summer Job Fair!
Review your Experiences: The most important part of an interview is presenting yourself in a way that highlights your strengths. While an interview may just be a conversation, make sure that each sentence is purposeful. Show the employer you are the prime candidate for the position by emphasizing your past experiences and qualifications. Think about your accomplishments, work experience, volunteer experience, student group involvement, interests, and hobbies. An interview is an excellent way for the employer to get to know you! Employers will often ask you specifically about your weaknesses. They value honesty!
Practice, practice, practice: Find the perfect balance. You don’t want to be too formal and tense -- be confident in yourself and try to relax. Show a little personality! Let the employer know that you are right for the position and have gained the necessary skills from your experiences. Prepare a succinct response to all of the questions you come up with and practice in front of a mirror. Consider scheduling an appointment with a career counselor or signing-up for a mock interview with an employer!
Also, be prepared to ask the employer questions and take notes!
Reminder: Dress to impress and you’ll be on your way!
