Editor's Note: Starting with this week, we are going to have our weekly blog posts be aimed at clarifying misguided assumptions or problems regarding different aspects of their careers. Please leave us a comment if you like it!
I love providing students with resources to guide them towards developing their “next step”. But my largest pet peeve is when students and friends come up to me and say, “Find me a job, Linda!!”. I’m sorry to disappoint, but the Career Center is not a placement center; as much as we would like to, we do not have jobs to hand out like candy. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Career Center, we offer several resources within areas like career exploration, resume and cover letter critiques, job and internship search tips, ways to develop network and interview skills, and information on graduate school all of which can be explored with one of our peer advisors. Our career counselors can delve into greater depth regarding these topics in addition to other helpful information and references.
While we don’t have job listing available, aside from CalJobs (via Callisto), like many students are seeking, some helpful tips are as follows:
- Attend Employer Info Sessions (RSVP through Callisto) and Career Fairs held on campus to network with representatives from companies and organizations. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door and a chance for you to get acclimated with the world of employment searches.
- Make use of the @Cal Career Network ; talk to alumni who work in field similar to your interests and ask them how their experience was like as an undergraduate and how they got to where they are now.
- If you don’t have time to drop by for advising, utilize the Online Workshops and Quick Clip Videos.
- Read through the Job and Internship Guide
for more details regarding the aforementioned topics.
Remember, the more proactive you are about your job and internship search, the better your results will be. Network with professionals, recruiters, peers, professors, family members or contact employers directly and ask about any opportunities available. Use the list of employers (log into Callisto and click on events) that attended career fairs to familiarize yourself with what companies are out there, and keep updating your resume! The amount of resources out there are abundant! Good luck and come into the Career Center when you need help or have questions. It’s your future after all!
